Oceanic

Oceanic” is a live-improvised dance performance and a new media projection-mapping performance. “Oceanic” is inspired by the artist’s awareness of and experience with Afro-futurity and how it is received by audiences from diverse backgrounds, social layers, and stories. The film illustrates the artist’s appreciation of entanglement and the diasporic aspects of Afro-futurity and society.

She encouraged dancers to focus on their feelings and let their bodies flow. Each dancer also wore a word that resonated with them individually during the session. The artist built a world through each dancer’s immediate response to sounds and improvised body movements, informed by her study of many aspects of human beings and nature, as a space and a structure that contains feelings and spirit. Because the overall documentation process was entirely improvised, one of the collaborators behind the camera stepped into the circle and danced. The collaborator’s appreciation and immediate bodily reaction led him to move freely in response to the sound.

Viewers are also encouraged to question and consider the sacredness and empowerment of Afro-futurity. The film allows viewers to reconsider the boundaries between appreciation and appropriation of the concept and culture.
