Oceanic

“Oceanic” is a live-improvised dance performance and projection mapping new media performance. “Oceanic” is inspired by the artist’s awareness and experience with a concept aspect of Afro-futurity and how it is received by audiences from many different backgrounds, social layers, and stories. The film illustrates her appreciation of entanglement and diasporic aspects in Afro-futurity and society. She encouraged dancers to concentrate on their feelings and let their bodies flow. Each dancer also wore a word that resonates with them individually during the session. The artist built a world through each dancer’s instant reaction to sounds and improvised body movements related to her study of many different aspects of human beings and nature as a space and a structure that contains feelings and spirit. Since the overall documentation process was a total improvisation, one of the collaborators behind a camera jumped into the circle and danced. His appreciation and instant body reaction led him to move along with the sound freely. Viewers are also encouraged to question and consider the sacredness and empowerment of Afro-futurity. The film allows viewers to reconsider the boundaries between appreciation and appropriation of the concept and culture.
